Discover more about Forestiere Underground Gardens

The Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno, California, offer a cool escape and a fascinating look into the past. Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere began building his underground retreat in the early 1900s, seeking respite from the San Joaquin Valley's intense summer heat. Frustrated by the hardpan soil on his land, which was unsuitable for citrus trees, Forestiere started digging, eventually creating an entire subterranean complex by hand, using only shovels, picks and other hand tools. Over four decades, Forestiere carved over 65 rooms across 10 acres, reaching depths of up to 25 feet. His creation includes passageways, grottoes, courtyards, and even an underground home with a summer bedroom, winter bedroom, bath, kitchen, fishpond and parlor. Inspired by ancient Roman catacombs, Forestiere's design incorporated arches, vaults, and stone-built walls, using the excavated hardpan as building material. Skylights allowed sunlight to filter in, enabling him to grow a variety of fruit trees and grapevines underground, many of which still thrive today. Today, visitors can take guided walking tours through this unique underground world. The gardens are open from mid-March through October. The tour guides share the history of Baldassare Forestiere and his unique creation. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking on the earthen terrain. The Forestiere Underground Gardens are a California Registered Historical Landmark and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
