Discover more about Phillips Mansion

The Phillips Mansion, located in Pomona, California, is a testament to the ambition and elegance of the Gilded Age. Built in 1875 by Louis Phillips, a Prussian immigrant who became one of the wealthiest landowners in Los Angeles County, the mansion stands as a prime example of Second Empire Victorian architecture. Phillips acquired a vast Rancho San Jose in 1864 and sold a portion of it to establish the town of Pomona. The Phillips Mansion, however, remained his family's residence for many years and a hub of social activity in the region. The mansion also served as a stage stop where the Butterfield Stage Route intersected with the San Bernardino-Los Angeles Stage Road. Phillips also served as the postmaster for the Spadra area, making the mansion a center for the community. The mansion boasts eight rooms, 16-foot high ceilings, six fireplaces, and walls constructed from locally made bricks. The architecture is characterized by ornate details, a symmetrical design, and a distinctive mansard roof. Inside, visitors can admire elaborate moldings and original hardwood floors. Over the years, the Phillips Mansion has undergone several changes in ownership and even faced the threat of demolition. However, the Pomona Valley Historical Society stepped in to purchase the property in 1966 and has since worked to restore it to its former glory. While the mansion is not open for regular daily tours, it is accessible during special events, open house days, and by appointment. Check the Pomona Valley Historical Society's website for information on upcoming events and tour opportunities.
