Sub Dome: The Stairway to Half Dome
Conquer the Sub Dome, conquer Half Dome. A challenging climb with rewarding views in Yosemite National Park.
The Sub Dome is a prominent feature on the Half Dome Trail in Yosemite National Park, acting as a physically demanding prelude to the final cable ascent. Located just before the base of Half Dome, it requires hikers to ascend approximately 600 feet (183 meters) over a short distance, featuring uneven rock steps and steep granite inclines. As hikers climb above the tree line on Sub Dome, they are rewarded with increasingly expansive views. To the east, vistas open up towards Clouds Rest and the High Sierras, offering a taste of the panoramic beauty that awaits at the summit of Half Dome. The climb is exposed, with little to no shade, making it a challenging section of the hike, especially during the heat of the day. Park rangers often check permits at the base of the Sub Dome to ensure that only those with the necessary permissions proceed further. This is also a good spot to take a break before tackling the final stretch up the cables to the summit of Half Dome.
