Sentinel Falls: Yosemite's Stairway Cascade

Sentinel Falls, located in Yosemite National Park, California, is a captivating cascade situated beside the iconic Sentinel Rock. This seasonal waterfall distinguishes itself with a cumulative drop of over 2,000 feet (631 meters) across multiple tiers, making it the second-tallest waterfall on the south side of Yosemite Valley. The falls are sourced from Sentinel Creek, which drains from a basin near Glacier Point Road. The water's descent is characterized by a series of distinct steps, varying in height from 50 to 690 feet each. While not as voluminous as Yosemite Falls, Sentinel Falls offers a unique stair-stepping appearance as it flows down the valley wall. The best time to witness Sentinel Falls in its full glory is during the peak snowmelt period, typically in late spring, from March to June, with peak flow in May. By late summer, the falls often diminish to a trickle or dry up entirely. Several vantage points offer excellent views of Sentinel Falls. Southside Drive near the Sentinel Beach picnic area and Leidig Meadow provide close roadside views. For a more dramatic perspective, the Pohono Trail offers a vertigo-inducing look down at the falls. Alternatively, the Yosemite Falls Trail and areas near the Four Mile Trailhead also provide good views.
