Phnom Santuk: A Sacred Mountain Pilgrimage

Phnom Santuk, rising 207 meters above the surrounding plains of Kampong Thom province, is considered the most sacred mountain in the region. For centuries, it has served as a pilgrimage site for Cambodians seeking spiritual solace and connection. The mountain's history is interwoven with legends, including tales of King Thommo Reachea I transferring Buddha relics to the area in the 15th century. Another legend tells the story of a prince who fell ill and died on the mountain, leading to its name, which translates to "gloomy mountain".The climb to the summit is an experience in itself, with options to ascend the 809 steps or take a paved road. The traditional path is lined with countless figures holding up a naga serpent, reminiscent of the 'Churning of the Ocean of Milk' scene at Angkor Thom. Troops of monkeys populate the upper staircase, adding a playful element to the journey.At the summit, visitors can explore a vibrant ensemble of temples, shrines, and stupas, showcasing a mix of ancient and modern Khmer architectural styles. The most remarkable landmark is the gigantic statue of the reclining Buddha carved into the rock. Other highlights include Prasat Touch, a pyramid-shaped sandstone sanctuary, and Preah Bat Chann, a statue of Tuk carved into a stone block. The mountain also offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the Tonle Sap River valley, rice paddies, and forests.
