Getting there

Tuk-Tuk

From Kampot, tuk-tuks can be hired from the riverside area. Negotiate a fare to Phnom Kbal Romeas in Tuek Chhou; a round trip should cost approximately $10-$15. The journey takes about 15 minutes from Kampot and 25 minutes from Kep. Ensure the driver knows the destination and arrange a return time.

Motorbike

Motorbikes can be rented from various shops in Kampot for around $4-$20 per day. Head southeast on National Road 3 towards Kep. After crossing the bridge, turn left onto the dirt road (Road 139). Follow the road, cross the railway tracks, and continue straight under the arch to reach Phnom Kbal Romeas. Parking is available near the entrance. Be prepared for bumpy, unpaved roads.

Phnom Kbal Romeas, also known as Rhinoceros Head Hill, is a small mountain riddled with caves that have served as a prehistoric site and a shelter for Khmer, Cham, and Chinese people during the Khmer Rouge regime. Archaeological discoveries of marine shells and ceramics indicate human settlement dating back to 5370 BC. The site gained prominence during the Neolithic Revolution around 3420 BC.Inside the main cavern, sunlight streams through openings, illuminating small Buddhist altars. The caves feature unique rock formations, stalactites, and remains of ancient brick structures.Today, Phnom Kbal Romeas is a popular spot for rock climbing and caving, with Climbodia offering guided tours and climbing experiences for all skill levels. The summit offers panoramic views of Kampot's countryside, the ocean, salt fields, and Bokor Mountain.
