The Mangrove Protected Forest, situated in Krong Kaeb, is an enchanting ecological park that showcases the beauty and ecological significance of Cambodia's coastal ecosystems. This protected area, located in Thmey Village, Prey Thom Commune, spans one kilometer and has been designated by the community and authorities as a sanctuary. As you stroll along the winding paths, you'll encounter a variety of mangrove trees, which play a crucial role in the local environment. These mangroves act as natural barriers against storm surges, waves, and coastal erosion, with their dense root systems stabilizing shorelines and reducing the impact of storms and flooding. The unique landscape provides a habitat for numerous species of birds, fish, and other wildlife, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching and photography enthusiasts. The forest also offers an educational experience, where tourists can learn about the importance of mangroves in coastal protection and biodiversity conservation. Mangroves improve water quality by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments, protecting nearby coral reefs and seagrass beds. These forests support over 100,000 fishermen and their families, providing essential resources and livelihoods for coastal communities. In a time of global warming, mangroves are invaluable, storing up to four times more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests.
