Kouk Preah Theat Temple: Echoes of the Chenla Kingdom

Kouk Preah Theat Temple, also known as Prasat Kouk Preah Theat, is a captivating historical site located in Hanchey village, Stueng Trang District. This ancient Hindu temple dates back to the 7th century, during the Chenla era, under the reign of King Isanarvarman I. The temple is sometimes recorded as Han Chey North I and is part of the Han Chey group of temples.The temple's architecture and intricate details showcase the artistry of the Khmer civilization. The temple is built from basalt stone, a unique feature as only one other temple in Cambodia shares this construction material. Measuring 7 meters in size, with each square being 4.5 meters long and 5 meters high, the temple features floral artwork and patterns in the pilasters and bands around the structure. The upper registers display curved molding and niches inset with faces, though many are decayed. Inside, a pedestal and a spout that feeds to an external water spout can be found.Restoration work was carried out on the site in 1994, with further work potentially done in 2005/2006, during which the base of a second tower and a decayed statue of Nandin were unearthed. The temple provides a serene ambiance, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquil environment and connect with Cambodia's spiritual heritage.
