Phnom Srei: The Woman's Mountain

Phnom Srei, translating to "Woman's Mountain," is a captivating landmark in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. According to legend, Phnom Srei and its counterpart, Phnom Pros (Man's Mountain), originated from a competition between men and women to determine who would propose marriage. The women, through cleverness, won, leading to the tradition of men asking for a woman's hand in marriage.To reach the summit, visitors climb 308 steps. The panoramic views from the top showcase Kampong Cham province, with its lush greenery and the Mekong River. Ancient temples and pagodas, maintained by nuns, adorn the summit. Donations support ongoing restoration efforts. The temples feature vintage paintings depicting scenes from Khmer history.Phnom Srei also bears witness to Cambodia's tumultuous past. During the Khmer Rouge regime, it served as a site of detention and torture. Despite this, Phnom Srei stands as a symbol of resilience.
