Discover more about Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk

Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk, meaning 'the temple in the richness of the forest' in Khmer, stands as a testament to Cambodia's rich pre-Angkorian history. This UNESCO World Heritage site, located 30 kilometers north of Kampong Thom, was once the capital of the Chenla Kingdom, known as Ishanapura, flourishing from the late 6th to the early 9th centuries. The sprawling complex, nestled amidst the tranquil Cambodian forest, encompasses over a hundred brick temples and structures, offering a captivating glimpse into a civilization that laid the foundation for the grandeur of Angkor. The site is highly regarded for its well-preserved temples, the incredible and unique art that they present, and for its importance in the history of Southeast Asia. Originally discovered in 1884, the site comprises three principal temple groups: Prasat Sambor, Prasat Tao, and Prasat Yeai Poeun, each enclosed by concentric walls. These groups showcase distinct architectural styles and artistic expressions characteristic of the pre-Angkorian period. The temples, primarily constructed from brick and sandstone, feature intricate carvings, octagonal towers, and unique design elements that distinguish them from later Angkorian monuments. A notable feature is the octagonal shape of several temples, for which no Indian precedent is known. Prasat Sambor, the main temple group, is dedicated to Gambhireshvara, an incarnation of Shiva. Dating back to the 7th and 10th centuries, this complex boasts several towers with well-preserved brick carvings and a series of large yoni, female fertility symbols, surrounding the central tower. The influence of Indian culture is evident in the artwork and carvings found throughout the complex. Prasat Tao, also known as the Lion Temple, is renowned for the two magnificent stone lions guarding its entrance. These elaborately coiffed lions, standing as sentinels, are prime examples of Chenla carvings. The temple's central tower, reaching a height of 19 meters, is a prominent landmark within the complex. Prasat Yeai Poeun, perhaps the most atmospheric of the three ensembles, exudes an aura of mystery as it lies seemingly lost in the forest. Ancient trees embrace the temple ruins, their roots intertwining with the brickwork.
