Discover more about Banteay Chhmar temple

Banteay Chhmar, meaning "Small Citadel" or "Narrow Fortress", is one of Cambodia's most significant yet least understood temples from the Angkorian period. Constructed during the reign of Jayavarman VII, the temple stands as a dedication to his son and four royal servants who protected him. The temple complex sprawls over 9 square kilometers and includes the main temple, satellite shrines, and a large baray (reservoir), echoing the layout of Angkor Thom. The temple's architecture and bas-reliefs bear a striking resemblance to those of Bayon, featuring enigmatic face towers and intricate carvings depicting military engagements and scenes from daily life. The outer gallery walls showcase bas-reliefs that would stretch nearly a kilometer if placed end to end. These carvings offer a glimpse into the battles between the Khmer and Cham kingdoms, as well as the lives of ordinary people during the Angkor period. In the centuries following the decline of the Khmer Empire, Banteay Chhmar was overtaken by the jungle, remaining relatively unknown. The temple suffered further damage in the 20th century due to looting and civil war. Today, Banteay Chhmar is undergoing conservation efforts to restore and preserve this unique archaeological site. Exploring Banteay Chhmar offers a mystical experience, with the opportunity to witness a remote, deserted temple complex that embodies the grandeur of the Khmer civilization.
