Discover more about Wat Phnom Daun Penh

Wat Phnom Daun Penh, more than just a temple, is the symbolic and historical epicenter of Phnom Penh. Perched atop the city's only hill, rising 46 meters above the surrounding landscape, this sacred site offers a tranquil escape and a captivating glimpse into Cambodia's rich cultural tapestry. According to legend, in 1372, a wealthy widow named Daun Penh discovered four Buddha statues and one Vishnu statue inside a Koki tree floating in the river. Inspired, she built a temple on a man-made hill to house these sacred artifacts, an act that would forever link her name to the city. Phnom Penh literally means 'Penh's Hill'. Over the centuries, Wat Phnom has undergone numerous renovations, with the main building visible today constructed in 1926. The complex includes a pagoda, a stupa enshrining the ashes of King Ponhea Yat, shrines dedicated to Daun Penh and other deities, and a small museum displaying artifacts. Murals depicting stories from the Jataka and the Reamker adorn the walls. Today, Wat Phnom remains an active place of worship, where monks reside and locals come to pray and make offerings. Visitors can also release caged birds, a tradition believed to earn merit. The temple is a 'must-visit' when in Phnom Penh.
