Discover more about Silver Pagoda

The Silver Pagoda, officially Wat Ubaosoth Ratanaram, is more commonly known as Wat Preah Keo, meaning 'Temple of the Emerald Buddha'. Situated within the Royal Palace complex, it stands as a testament to Cambodian royalty and the enduring strength of Buddhism. Originally constructed as a wooden structure in 1892 during the reign of King Norodom, the pagoda provided a sacred space for the King to worship, pray, and observe Buddhist Silas Day. It also served as the venue for royal Buddhist ceremonies. In 1962, under the direction of Samdach Preah Norodom Sihanouk, the temple was rebuilt with reinforced concrete, and the iconic silver tiles were added to the floor. The pagoda's grounds display a blend of Khmer and European architectural styles. The interior showcases many historically significant artifacts, including the Emerald Buddha. The Silver Pagoda also houses a life-sized gold Buddha statue, commissioned in 1907, weighing 90kg and adorned with thousands of diamonds. The walls surrounding the temple are decorated with murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana, painted by Cambodian artists in the early 20th century. Despite suffering damage during the Khmer Rouge regime, the Silver Pagoda was later restored, solidifying its place as a symbol of Cambodian culture and resilience.
