For those seeking more secluded beaches, a short boat trip to nearby islands like Koh Rong or Koh Rong Sanloem is recommended.Historically, the area near Hawaii Beach was a base camp for a French/Cambodian construction crew in 1955, who were building a deep-water port. The United States funded the road linking the seaport to Phnom Penh. The port was officially inaugurated in 1960 and the city was renamed Preah Sihanouk.
