The Preah Thong Neang Neak Roundabout is a significant landmark in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, featuring a statue that represents the mythical origins of the Khmer people. The statue depicts Prince Preah Thong clasping the robe of Neang Neak, the dragon princess, as they emerge from the ocean. This symbolizes the marriage between the prince and the dragon princess, which, according to legend, led to the founding of Cambodia. The roundabout is located at the intersection of two major boulevards in Sihanoukville. The statue itself stands 21 meters tall and is set on a roundabout with a 99-meter diameter. The statue faces towards Ream Beach to the south, signifying the couple's journey from the sea. The Preah Thong Neang Neak statue was designed by a team of road technical staff led by architect Dr. Ly Rasmey. The statue was produced by Norak Singh, who worked with the Shanwei Sculpture Institute of China to create the bronze casting. According to the legend, Prince Thong journeyed to the underwater kingdom of the Naga to seek the hand of Princess Neang Neak in marriage. Her father, the Naga King, agreed and created the land of Cambodia by drinking the ocean and pushing back the tides. This statue commemorates that mythical event and is a powerful symbol of Cambodian identity and history. The story is also reflected in Cambodian wedding traditions where the groom holds the bride's scarf, mirroring Preah Thong holding Neang Neak's robe.
