Discover more about Preah Ko Temple

Preah Ko, or 'Sacred Bull,' stands as the inaugural temple of Hariharalaya, the former capital predating Angkor Thom. Erected in 879 AD by King Indravarman I, the temple pays homage to the king's family and their relationship with Shiva. The name comes from the statues of Nandi, the sacred bull and mount of Shiva, positioned in front of the central towers. The temple comprises six brick towers arranged in two rows on a sandstone platform, facing east. The front central tower, the tallest, is dedicated to Jayavarman II, founder of the Khmer empire. The other front towers honor King Indravarman's father and grandfather, while the rear towers are dedicated to their wives. The towers feature elaborate carvings and inscriptions in Sanskrit. Once surrounded by a 500m moat, the temple complex had three enclosures. Today, only remnants of the outer enclosures remain. The temple offers a glimpse into the early Khmer empire and the artistry of its builders, providing a peaceful escape from the crowds of Angkor Wat.
