Hanchey Temple: A Mekong Overlook

Wat Hanchey, also known as Prasat Hanchey, is a captivating temple complex located 20 kilometers north of Kampong Cham, in the Stueng Trang District. Situated on a remote hillside, the temple offers visitors picturesque views of the Mekong River after a climb of approximately 300 steps.Originally constructed as a Hindu place of worship during the Chenla Empire in the 7th and 8th centuries, Wat Hanchey later became a Buddhist temple. This blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences is evident in the architecture and monuments throughout the complex. A weathered, red-brick stupa, believed to date back to the Chenla era, stands as one of the few structures that survived both American bombings and the Khmer Rouge regime.Today, Wat Hanchey is home to many young Cambodian monks who are cared for by the temple. Visitors can witness the monks' daily activities, receive a traditional water blessing, and explore the various temples, pagodas, and statues. The temple also plays a vital role in the spiritual lives of the surrounding communities, hosting religious festivals and ceremonies.
