Chutes de la Métché: A Natural Spectacle and Site of Remembrance

Chutes de la Métché is a captivating waterfall located near Bafoussam, in the western region of Cameroon. The falls are on the Metchié-Choumi River, cascading down approximately 40 meters through rock formations in the Western High Plateau at an altitude of 1297 meters. The cascading waters create a beautiful spectacle, flowing over multiple rock layers and forming natural pools at different levels.Beyond its natural beauty, Chutes de la Métché carries historical and cultural significance. It has long been a traditional worship site for the Bamileke people. During the independence war, it was a grim location for the execution of nationalists. Local legends also tell that the falls were a place for sacrifices to remove curses and lament the dead. Evidence of these traditions can sometimes be seen at the entrance, with salt, coins, palm oil, and food left as offerings.Visitors can explore the falls via trails, with vantage points offering panoramic views. Though access to the base of the falls is facilitated by stairs, a more daring descent to the grotto requires a ladder mainly used by marabouts and exorcists for sacred ceremonies. The area is rich in biodiversity, offering opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.
