The Limbe Botanic Garden, founded in 1892, stands as a testament to Cameroon's rich botanical heritage. Originally established by German colonizers as a trial garden for economically valuable tropical species, it has evolved into a leading center for conservation, education, and tourism. Situated between the Atlantic coast and the foothills of Mount Cameroon, the garden benefits from fertile volcanic soil and a tropical climate, creating an ideal environment for a wide array of plant life. Covering 48 hectares, the garden is home to over 3,000 plant species, including rare and endangered varieties. Visitors can explore themed trails, such as the medicinal plants trail, which highlights the traditional uses of local flora, and the coastal trail, which offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The Bota adventure trail leads to the largest tree in the garden atop Bota Hill. The Limbe Botanic Garden also features a primate sanctuary, housing chimpanzees, gorillas, and mandrills.Beyond its botanical attractions, the garden holds historical significance. Remnants of its colonial past can be seen in the architecture and layout. It also contains a military cemetery with the graves of Commonwealth soldiers from both World War I and World War II.
