Mount Cameroon: The Chariot of the Gods

Hike West Africa's highest peak, an active volcano with stunning views, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural significance.

4.2

Mount Cameroon, a majestic and active stratovolcano, dominates the landscape of southwestern Cameroon. Known locally as 'Mongo ma Ndemi,' or the 'Mountain of Greatness,' it holds the title of the highest peak in West Africa. Rising from the coast near Buea, the mountain presents a dramatic change in altitude, resulting in varied ecological zones, from lush rainforests to sparse volcanic fields. The mountain's volcanic activity has shaped its landscape over millennia, with eruptions occurring throughout recorded history; the most recent was in 2012. These eruptions have created fertile volcanic soil, supporting agriculture in the surrounding areas. Hiking on Mount Cameroon offers a unique experience, with trails traversing lava flows from past eruptions. Mount Cameroon is also a place of cultural significance for the local Bakweri people, who consider the mountain sacred. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope attracts athletes from around the world, showcasing both physical prowess and the mountain's challenging terrain. Visitors can explore the mountain's diverse flora and fauna within Mount Cameroon National Park, established in 2009.
