La Pagode, or the Palace of King Bell, is an unmissable historical site located in the Bonanjo district of Douala. Built in 1905, this architectural marvel served as the residence of King Auguste Manga Ndumbe during the German colonial era. The palace is also known as La Pagode, a name given by French writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline, who stayed in Douala in 1916-17 and described it in his novel *Voyage au bout de la nuit*. The palace showcases a unique blend of German and local architectural styles, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Cameroon. King Auguste Manga Ndumbe, who ascended to the throne in 1897, was a wealthy and influential figure who invested in cocoa and palm oil plantations, as well as real estate in Bonanjo. He lived in the palace for only three years, passing away in 1908. His son, Rudolph Douala Manga Bell, and his wife Emma Engomè Dayas, then resided there until Rudolph's arrest and execution in 1914 by the German authorities. Today, La Pagode is owned by the Bell royal family and has been occupied by various businesses since 1920. In 2006, doual'art, a contemporary art gallery, installed a sign designed by Sandrine Dole that presents a historical image and description of the building. While the building may be in need of some care, its historical significance and unique architecture continue to draw visitors. La Pagode stands as a reminder of Douala's colonial past and the legacy of the Bell dynasty.

La Pagode is located in the Bonanjo district, a central area of Douala. From the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre et Paul, walk approximately 500 meters north along Rue de la Gare, then turn left onto Rue de la Marine. La Pagode will be on your right. This is a straightforward walk within the city center.

From Douala Airport, take the S2 bus towards the city center. Get off at a bus stop in Bonanjo, such as near the Douala Maritime Museum. From there, La Pagode is a short walk away. The bus fare is approximately 250 XAF.
