    The Temple du Centenaire, or Centenary Temple, is a significant religious and historical landmark in Douala, Cameroon. Constructed in 1947, it marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the first Christian church, Bethel, in Douala by British pastor Alfred Saker in 1847. The church is affiliated with the Église Évangélique du Cameroun (Evangelical Church of Cameroon).The temple's architecture is notable for its blend of modern and traditional elements, featuring a bright white exterior and a distinctive green roof. This striking design makes it easily visible from a distance and a recognizable landmark in the Akwa I district.The arrival of Christianity in Cameroon dates back to 1843, spearheaded by the Baptist Missionary Society of London. Missionaries Joseph Merrick and Jackson Fuller, both of Jamaican descent, played a crucial role in the early evangelization efforts. Alfred Saker, however, became the emblematic figure of the Protestant mission, being the first white man to settle in the area in 1845 with the approval of King Akwa. He built the first Bethel church and the first school in Cameroon. In 1849, Saker performed the first baptism of a Cameroonian in the Wouri River.The Temple du Centenaire stands not only as a place of worship but also as a living testament to the history of Douala and the evolution of Christianity in Cameroon.
