Discover more about La Pagode

La Pagode, or the Palace of King Bell, is located in the bustling Bonanjo district of Douala. Constructed in 1905, during the German colonial era, it served as the residence for King Auguste Manga Ndumbe. The building's design reflects a unique fusion of German and indigenous architectural elements, showcasing the city's diverse cultural influences. King Auguste Manga Ndumbe, who ascended to the throne in 1897, established extensive cocoa and palm oil plantations to bolster Douala's economy. He also invested significantly in real estate within Bonanjo. La Pagode became a symbol of his wealth and power. However, he only resided there for three years, passing away in 1908. His son, Rudolf Douala Manga Bell, succeeded him, reigning until 1914. Rudolf's opposition to German colonial policies led to his execution in 1914, marking a tragic chapter in the palace's history. The name "La Pagode" was given to the palace by French writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline, who stayed in Douala in 1916-17. Today, La Pagode stands as a historical landmark, attracting visitors with its unique architecture and cultural significance. It has also served various purposes over the years, including housing the offices of a forestry company and a naval society. Currently, it hosts a space for contemporary arts.
