The Douala Maritime Museum, located in the Bonanjo district, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Cameroon's maritime heritage. Opened in 2013, the museum's architecture itself is a draw, resembling the stern of a ship. The museum's collection includes sculptures, photographs, maps, and paintings that illustrate the relationship between man and the sea, the evolution of ships in Cameroonian ports, and the history of trade. Exhibits also delve into the colonial struggle and traditional fishing practices. A highlight is the 3D booth, which offers an interactive experience.The museum's origins trace back to 1986 when it was first established by the National Council of Loaders of Cameroon (CNCC). After facing closure and deterioration, the museum was revitalized and reopened in a new building on Avenue des Cocotiers. Today, the three-story museum spans 600 square meters, with 400 square meters dedicated to exhibitions and an 80-square-meter multipurpose room for educational programs. The museum also collaborates with international entities to enhance its programs.
