Dedicated to Gustav Nachtigal, a German explorer and colonial administrator, the monument marks a period when Cameroon was under German control from 1884 to 1919. Nachtigal died at sea on April 20, 1885, and was initially buried in Grand Bassam (now in Ivory Coast). In 1888, his remains were reburied in Douala, in front of the Kamerun colonial government building.
