The falls are formed by the Nkam River, cascading down approximately 80 meters (262 feet) into a stunning gorge. The falls are often referred to as twin waterfalls, with a primary, continuously flowing 'male' fall and a 'female' fall that is most prominent during the rainy season. The name Ekom Nkam is derived from the village of Ekom, where the falls are located, and the Nkam River. Legend has it that the name originated from early encounters with German colonizers, where locals trying to explain their origin near the Nkam River, said a phrase that sounded like “Ekom Nkam”. The area surrounding the falls is a vibrant, green rainforest, teeming with diverse flora and fauna.Ekom Nkam Waterfalls gained international recognition after serving as a filming location for the movie 'Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan' in 1984, which brought attention to the falls' wild beauty. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails that offer various viewpoints of the falls and the surrounding landscape. The best time to visit is during the rainy season (March to October) to witness the full power of both waterfalls, though the dry season (November to February) offers easier access and clearer trails.
