Discover more about Mt Cameroon

Mount Cameroon, a majestic and active volcano also known as Fako or Mongo ma Ndemi, dominates the landscape of southwestern Cameroon. As the highest peak in West Africa, it presents a compelling challenge for hikers and adventurers. The mountain's diverse ecosystems, ranging from lush tropical rainforests at its base to a stark, volcanic summit, create a unique and unforgettable experience. The climb is a journey through varied vegetation zones. The lower slopes are swathed in dense rainforest, home to diverse flora and fauna. As you ascend, the landscape transitions to montane forest and then to savannah. Above the treeline, a dramatic volcanic landscape unfolds, marked by lava flows from past eruptions. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the coastline, nearby cities, and, on a clear day, as far as the eye can see. Mount Cameroon is not only a natural wonder but also a site of cultural significance. The Bakweri people, who live on its slopes, hold the mountain sacred. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, an international mountain running event, showcases both the physical challenge and the cultural importance of the peak. While the climb doesn't require specialized mountaineering equipment, it is a strenuous trek that typically takes two to three days. The most popular route, the Guinness Trail, is a steep and direct path to the summit. Along the way, basic huts provide shelter for overnight stays. Hiring a local guide and porter is highly recommended, and in some cases required, to ensure a safe and enriching experience.
