Discover more about Limbe Wildlife Centre

Nestled in Limbe, Cameroon, the Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) stands as a beacon of hope for the nation's threatened wildlife. Established in 1993 as a partnership between the Cameroonian government and the Pandrillus Foundation, the center addresses the urgent need to protect animals affected by habitat degradation, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade. The LWC provides a sanctuary for over 250 animals, including critically endangered Western Lowland Gorillas, endangered chimpanzees, drills, Preuss's monkeys, and African grey parrots. Many of these animals are orphans whose families were killed by poachers, while others were illegally kept as pets or confiscated from local markets. The center focuses on rehabilitating these animals and, when possible, releasing them back into the wild. The center also plays a vital role in conservation education, welcoming approximately 50,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom are Cameroonian. Through guided tours and educational programs, the LWC raises awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the threats facing Cameroon's wildlife. The LWC also works with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods and reduce reliance on hunting. As a founding member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), the Limbe Wildlife Centre is recognized for its commitment to wildlife conservation and animal welfare. The center collaborates with researchers to study wildlife health and ecology, contributing to a deeper understanding of conservation challenges and strategies.
