Limbe Botanic Garden: A Coastal Oasis of Biodiversity

The Limbe Botanic Garden, founded in 1892 by German horticulturist Dr. Paul Preuss, is a living testament to Cameroon's rich biodiversity and colonial history. Initially, the garden served as a center for the acclimatization of economically valuable plants like rubber, coffee, cocoa, and bananas. The goal was to support the economy of Kamerun and other German colonies. Today, the garden has transformed into a multifaceted attraction, combining recreation, tourism, education, and conservation.Stretching across 48 hectares, the garden boasts a diverse collection of tropical flora, including medicinal plants, ornamental flowers, and rare species native to the Mount Cameroon region. Visitors can explore marked trails, such as the coastal path with views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Riverside Trail for birdwatching, and the Bota Adventure Trail leading to the garden's largest tree. The Limbe Botanic Garden is also home to the Jungle Village, an open-air amphitheater surrounded by a tertiary forest. The garden also features a military cemetery, holding the graves of Commonwealth soldiers from WWI and WWII.The Limbe Botanic Garden plays a vital role in conservation and research, with ongoing efforts to preserve endangered plant species and promote sustainable development. It also offers educational programs for schools and universities, as well as workshops and seminars for researchers and professionals.
