History of Littoral

The city of Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon, was founded in the 17th century by the Duala people. Initially a fishing village, it grew into a major trading post due to its strategic location on the Wouri River and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. European traders, including the Portuguese, Germans, and British, were attracted to its port for the trade of goods such as palm oil, rubber, and ivory.
In 1884, Douala became a German colony as part of Kamerun. The Germans established Douala as the administrative capital and initiated significant infrastructural development, including roads, railways, and buildings. The German influence is still evident in some of the architecture and urban planning in Douala today.
During World War I, Douala was an important strategic location. In 1914, the city was captured by Allied forces, leading to the end of German control. After the war, the League of Nations mandated the territory to be divided between the French and British, with Douala becoming part of French Cameroon.
Under French rule, Douala continued to develop as an economic hub. The French administration expanded the port facilities, improved infrastructure, and established educational institutions. The city became a melting pot of cultures as people from different regions and countries moved to Douala for opportunities.
Cameroon gained independence from France on January 1, 1960. Douala, as the economic heart of the nation, experienced rapid growth.
