The Maritime Museum of Douala, located in the Bonanjo district, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the maritime heritage of Cameroon. Opened in 2013, the museum's architecture itself is a draw, resembling the stern of a ship and offering scenic views of the Douala coastline. The museum's collection features a wide array of historical, cultural, and artistic objects related to Cameroon's maritime past. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing traditional fishing tools, navigational instruments, sculptures, photographs, maps, and paintings. These exhibits delve into themes such as man in his natural environment, the evolution of ships, and the history of trade in Cameroonian ports. Interactive exhibits, including a sailing simulator and a 3D booth, offer engaging learning experiences for all ages. The museum's origins trace back to 1986 when the National Council of Loaders of Cameroon (CNCC) established the first Maritime Museum. After facing closure and deterioration, the museum was revitalized in 2011 with a new building on Avenue des Cocotiers. Today, the three-story museum spans 600 square meters, with 400 square meters dedicated to exhibitions and an 80-square-meter multipurpose room for educational activities. The museum also hosts regular guided tours and educational programs, enhancing the visitor experience.
