Discover more about Limbe Wildlife Centre

The Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC), also known as the Limbe Primate Sanctuary, stands as a leading wildlife conservation center in West Africa. Established in 1993 as a collaboration between the Cameroonian government and the Pandrillus Foundation, the center replaced a former zoo and has since become a refuge for primates and other animals rescued from Cameroon's illegal wildlife trade. The LWC plays a crucial role in enforcing national wildlife protection laws and provides a sanctuary for animals seized by law enforcement agencies. It is home to 15 primate species native to Cameroon, including gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, mandrills, baboons, mangabeys, and guenons. The center has Africa's best record for gorilla rehabilitation and care, including the only known Cross River gorilla in captivity. Besides primates, the LWC also cares for small carnivores, duikers, birds, and reptiles, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild whenever possible.Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, the Limbe Wildlife Centre is deeply committed to conservation education. It welcomes approximately 50,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom are Cameroonian. Through guided tours and educational programs, the center raises awareness about the threats to wildlife and the importance of biodiversity conservation. The LWC also engages with local communities through outreach programs and alternative employment opportunities to reduce reliance on hunting. The center spans 20 hectares near the Limbe Botanical Garden and provides a unique opportunity for the public to witness rescued animals living in healthy, social groups within enriched environments. Unlike a traditional zoo, the LWC focuses on rehabilitating animals for release or providing lifelong care for those unable to return to the wild.
