Discover more about Mt Cameroon

Mount Cameroon, a volcanic giant, presents a unique and challenging climb through diverse ecosystems. Starting from the coastal tropical rainforest, the ascent transitions through montane forests, grasslands, and finally, a barren volcanic landscape near the summit. The peak is often chilly, windy, and occasionally flecked with snow, a stark contrast to the warm coastal plains below. The mountain's volcanic activity has shaped its landscape, with over 100 cinder cones lining its flanks. The most recent eruption occurred in 2012, a reminder of the mountain's dynamic nature. Previous eruptions in 1959, 1999, and 2000 have left visible lava flows, creating a surreal hiking experience. Known locally as 'Mongo ma Ndemi,' Mount Cameroon holds cultural significance, with some calling it 'the chariots of god'. The mountain is also a biodiversity hotspot, home to a wide array of plant and animal species, including over 370 bird species, some of which are unique to the region. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope attracts international competitors, testing their endurance on the steep slopes. For those seeking a less competitive experience, guided tours offer various itineraries, from two-day summit hikes to longer treks exploring the mountain's craters and wilderness reserves.
