The Assemblée Nationale plays a crucial role in holding the government accountable and representing the diverse interests of the Cameroonian people.The history of the National Assembly dates back to the French colonial era with the establishment of the Assemblée Représentative du Cameroun (ARCAM) in 1946. Over the years, it evolved through various forms, including the Assemblée Territoriale du Cameroun (ATCAM) and the Assemblée Législative du Cameroun (ALCAM), before becoming the Assemblée Nationale in 1960. Following reunification in 1961, the Assemblée Nationale Fédérale was created. The modern Assemblée Nationale, with its 180 members elected to five-year terms, reflects Cameroon's journey towards a more representative and democratic government.The Assemblée Nationale not only serves as a place of lawmaking, but also as a symbol of national unity and democratic ideals. In April 2025, the building was renamed Palais des Verres Paul Biya, in honor of the President of Cameroon.
