The tower was designed by the Toronto architectural firm Bregman and Hamann, drawing inspiration from the Space Needle in Seattle. The name 'Skylon' was chosen to evoke a 'space-aged version of a skyscraper'. The construction of the tower was a feat of engineering, with concrete poured continuously for 38 days using a slip-form technique.
