Point Prim Lighthouse: A Beacon of History
Explore PEI's oldest lighthouse: a historic beacon offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the island's maritime past.
Perched at the tip of Point Prim, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners safely into Charlottetown Harbour for over 175 years. Built in 1845, Point Prim is not only PEI's oldest lighthouse but also a unique example of early maritime architecture in Canada. Designed by Isaac Smith, the architect behind Province House, its circular brick structure is a rarity, with only one other similar lighthouse existing in Canada. Originally constructed of local brick, the lighthouse was sheathed in shingles just two years later to combat the harsh maritime weather. Visitors can explore the interior, climb to the top for stunning views, and learn about the lighthouse's history through exhibits and displays. The adjacent Keeper's Cottage houses a gift shop with locally crafted items and accessible washrooms. Point Prim Lighthouse is more than just a historic landmark; it's a community hub and a place to connect with the island's maritime heritage. With its beautiful setting and fascinating history, it's a destination that offers something for everyone.
