St. Dunstan's Basilica: A Charlottetown Landmark

St. Dunstan's Basilica stands as a testament to faith and architectural grandeur in the heart of Charlottetown. The basilica's history dates back to 1843, with the present structure completed in 1919 after a devastating fire. It serves as the cathedral for the Diocese of Charlottetown and holds the honorary title of basilica, one of only a few in Canada.The basilica's exterior showcases French Gothic Revival architecture, characterized by its towering twin spires that dominate the city's skyline. The spires are adorned with 10-foot-high crosses. The facade features sculptures of the Four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.Inside, the basilica follows a Latin cross layout with a cavernous vaulted ceiling. Arches flank the nave, and depictions of the Stations of the Cross line the walls. Stained glass windows, featuring nearly 300 angels, illuminate the interior with color. The altar boasts 23 statues and is crowned by a 14-foot-wide rose window.St. Dunstan's was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990, recognized for its High Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. The basilica is located on Great George Street, near Province House, in the city's historic downtown.
