Pointe-à-la-Renommée Lighthouse stands as a testament to Quebec's maritime history and innovation. The site, overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence, features a striking red lighthouse that has guided navigators since 1880. Originally known as Fame Point, the area gained prominence with the establishment of the first maritime wireless telegraphy station in North America by Guglielmo Marconi in 1904.The current lighthouse, dating back to 1906, is constructed of prefabricated cast-iron components. The original wooden lighthouse was replaced by this innovative structure. For nearly a century, from 1880 to 1975, the lighthouse served as a crucial navigational aid. In 1975, it was replaced by a solar-powered steel tower. The decommissioned lighthouse was dismantled and transported to Quebec City in 1977, where it remained a tourist attraction until 1997, when it was returned to its original location due to the efforts of local citizens.Today, Pointe-à-la-Renommée is a heritage site offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of lightkeepers and maritime wireless telegraph operators. The site includes the lighthouse, the Marconi station, and a replica of the lightkeeper's house, with exhibits showcasing artifacts and the history of the area. Visitors can also enjoy hiking trails with scenic views of the sea and mountains.
