Discover more about Ontario Historical Plaque - Canada's First Air Mail

The Ontario Historical Plaque commemorating Canada's First Air Mail marks a significant event in the country's aviation and postal history. Located in East York, near the former site of the Leaside Aerodrome, the plaque tells the story of Canada's inaugural airmail flight on June 24, 1918. Captain Brian Peck of the Royal Air Force, along with Corporal C.W. Mathers, flew a Curtiss JN-4 biplane from Montreal to Toronto, carrying 120 letters. The flight, sponsored by the Aerial League of the British Empire, aimed to demonstrate the potential of aviation for civilian purposes, particularly mail delivery. The journey wasn't without its challenges; headwinds and rain forced the pilots to make refueling stops in Kingston and Deseronto. After nearly six hours, they arrived at Leaside Aerodrome, marking the successful completion of the first official airmail service in Canada. The Leaside Aerodrome, though no longer in operation, holds a special place in Canadian aviation history. The plaque serves as a reminder of the pioneering spirit of early aviators and the transformative impact of air travel on connecting communities across Canada.
