Roundhouse Park: Toronto's Railway Heritage

Roundhouse Park, a unique urban space in Toronto, offers a glimpse into the city's railway history. Built in 1997 atop the southern expansion of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, the park occupies what was once a vital part of Toronto's Railway Lands.The park's centerpiece is the John Street Roundhouse, constructed between 1929 and 1931 for the Canadian Pacific Railway. This roundhouse serviced steam locomotives for over thirty years and later diesel-electric locomotives until 1986. The facility was known for the meticulous maintenance of its locomotives, a standard known among railroaders as the “John Street polish”.Today, Roundhouse Park is home to the Toronto Railway Museum, which preserves and showcases the city's railway heritage. Visitors can explore vintage locomotives and rail cars, learn about the railway's impact on Toronto's growth, and even enjoy a ride on a miniature railway. The park also features the fully restored and operational 120-foot locomotive turntable, originally built in 1931.In addition to the museum, the park houses Steam Whistle Brewing, located in a portion of the original roundhouse, and The Rec Room, an entertainment complex. Other attractions include the Canadian Pacific Railway Don Station, Signal Cabin D, a water tower, and a coaling tower. Roundhouse Park hosts various events throughout the year, including concerts and festivals.
