The ship was initially named Ella Mary and served as a private yacht before being sold and renamed Bigwin, after Bigwin Inn and Chief John Bigwin.For decades, the SS Bigwin played a vital role in the Muskoka region, transporting guests to the Bigwin Inn Resort. However, the ship was eventually abandoned and submerged in a slip next to Bigwin Inn from 1970 to 1991. Fortunately, a dedicated group of cottagers, residents, and organizations came together to fundraise and restore this precious piece of heritage. In 1991, the SS Bigwin was raised, and after years of restoration, it relaunched in July 2013.Today, the SS Bigwin offers regularly scheduled public cruises during the summer season, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of Lake of Bays.
