Discover more about Historic Properties

Historic Properties, also known as Privateer's Wharf, is a captivating blend of history and modern commerce nestled on the Halifax Boardwalk. This National Historic Site comprises three city blocks of meticulously restored waterfront warehouses, showcasing some of North America's finest examples of Victorian-Italianate facades dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s.Originally constructed between 1800 and 1875, these warehouses played a vital role in Halifax's maritime trade, serving as storage spaces, shops, and service providers. The area was a bustling hub for merchants, privateers, and traders, contributing significantly to the city's early prosperity. Notable figures like Enos Collins, a successful privateer and banker, were closely associated with these buildings. In the mid-20th century, the buildings fell into disrepair and faced demolition. Fortunately, in 1963, they were declared of “national historical importance” and saved. Today, Historic Properties offers a unique experience, blending historic charm with contemporary restaurants, boutiques, and services offering local goods. Visitors can explore character-filled shops, enjoy waterfront views, and immerse themselves in Halifax's rich maritime past.Recent renovations, started in September 2024, aim to enhance the area with new lighting, signage, and landscaping, ensuring its continued appeal for generations to come.
