Discover more about Government House

Government House, situated at 1451 Barrington Street in Halifax, stands as a testament to Nova Scotia's rich history and enduring connection to the Crown. As the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor, it is the oldest official residence in Canada, a title it rivals with the White House in Washington D.C.. Built between 1800 and 1807 for Sir John Wentworth, the then-governor of Nova Scotia, the building replaced a less-than-luxurious residence. Wentworth wanted a manor home fitting his and his wife's stature. The cornerstone was laid in September 1800, and the Wentworths took up residence by the fall of 1805. The construction materials were primarily sourced from Nova Scotia. Stone was brought from Pictou, Antigonish, and Cape Breton, while wood came from the Annapolis Valley. The architecture is Georgian, a style popular in England and its colonies from 1720 to 1840. The design features symmetrical windows, hipped rooflines, and chimneys on either side of the home. Over its history, Government House has undergone refurbishments, including a major renovation completed in 2009. Today, Government House hosts events, awards ceremonies, and cultural presentations. It is open to the public for guided tours during the summer months, showcasing its art, architecture, and historical memorabilia.
