Discover more about Historic Schmidtville Signage

Historic Schmidtville Signage welcomes visitors to a unique and historically significant neighborhood in the heart of Halifax. Established in 1830, Schmidtville was one of the first residential areas developed outside the original fortified town. Elizabeth Schmidt, the daughter of a British army armaments dealer, subdivided her land, formerly known as Pedley's Fields, into building lots, creating what was then called Schmidt's Ville.Schmidtville quickly became a lively suburb, home to merchants, artisans, and immigrants from various backgrounds. The neighborhood's architecture reflects its history, with simple Gregorian-style buildings alongside later Victorian-style homes. Mirror-image cottages, with identical but mirrored floor plans, are another distinctive architectural feature of the area.In the mid-20th century, Schmidtville faced significant changes, with a large portion of the neighborhood demolished for parking and urban development. However, community efforts led to the preservation of the remaining historic area, and in 2008, Schmidtville was designated a Heritage Conservation District. Today, visitors can explore Schmidtville's charming streets, admire its architecture, and learn about its fascinating past. The area stands as a testament to Halifax's history and the importance of preserving its unique neighborhoods.
