Discover more about Sir Sandford Fleming Memorial Tower

The Sir Sandford Fleming Memorial Tower, also known as the Dingle Tower, stands proudly in Sir Sandford Fleming Park, offering visitors a glimpse into Nova Scotia's history and stunning views of the Northwest Arm. The tower was built between 1908 and 1912 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of representative government in Nova Scotia, which was established in 1758. Sir Sandford Fleming, a prominent Canadian engineer and the creator of Standard Time, donated the land for the park and proposed the construction of the tower. The tower's architecture blends High Victorian and Edwardian Classical styles, reflecting a transitional moment in Canadian nationalism. The base is constructed of rough grey ironstone, while the upper story features grey granite and Palladian windows. Inside, a metal staircase leads to the viewing platform on the tenth floor. Plaques and stones from across the British Empire adorn the interior walls, commemorating the contributions made to the tower's construction. Flanking the entrance are two large bronze lions, donated by the Royal Colonial Institute of London in 1913 and sculpted by Albert Bruce-Joy. The park itself encompasses 95 acres and offers a variety of natural habitats, including woodlands, heath barren, saltwater, and a pond. Visitors can enjoy walking trails, a sandy beach, picnic areas, and a playground. The Dingle Tower is open seasonally, typically from April 1st to October 31st.
