The Forêt Ancienne du Lac-Preston, or Ancient Forest of Lac-Preston, is a protected old-growth forest located in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada. This exceptional forest ecosystem features two distinct zones near the Papineau-Labelle Wildlife Reserve, specifically in the municipality of Duhamel. What makes this forest particularly special is that it has remained largely untouched by severe natural disturbances like fires, insect epidemics, or strong winds for at least 400 years. Furthermore, it's considered a virgin ecosystem, never having been managed or disturbed by human activities.The forest is characterized by a mix of tree species, including uncommon hemlock stands, and remarkable structural features such as exceptionally large trees and abundant deadwood. The maple and hemlock stands regenerate through small gaps created by fallen trees, fostering a unique dynamic typical of old-growth forests. Some trees in the forest are over 30 meters tall and have diameters exceeding 80 cm. A yellow birch has been recorded as being over 420 years old.The forest is located between Lac Preston and Lac Marie-Lefranc, south of La Minerve. The area near Lac Marie-Lefranc includes a mountain with a cliff facing Gibraltar Bay and two lakes, including Lac des Crêpes. Hiking is a popular activity, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene beauty and rich biodiversity of this cherished natural landscape.
