Discover more about Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park

The Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park, located in St. Norbert, just south of Winnipeg, Manitoba, offers a unique blend of history, tranquility, and natural beauty. The park's main attraction is the ruins of Our Lady of the Prairies, a monastery established in 1892 by French-Canadian Trappist monks. The Trappist monks, members of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, sought a life of prayer, work, and contemplation. They established a self-sufficient community, complete with a church, monastic wing, and various agricultural enterprises. However, as urban life encroached upon their secluded location, the monks relocated to a quieter site in 1978. Five years later, a fire gutted the vacated church and residential wing, leaving behind the ruins that are now preserved as a provincial heritage site.Visitors can explore the stabilized ruins, wander through the landscaped grounds, and learn about the history of the Trappist monks and their way of life. The park also features the St. Norbert Arts Centre, housed in the former Trappist Monastery Guest House, which hosts various cultural events and exhibitions. Additionally, the World Peace Pagoda, constructed in 2000, stands near the ruins, adding another layer of serenity to the site. The park is located on Treaty One territory, the traditional territory of Anishinaabe, Ininew, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and the homeland of the Red River Métis.
