Pendlebury Lighthouse: A Beacon of History

Pendlebury Lighthouse, also known as St. Andrews Lighthouse, stands as a testament to the rich maritime history of St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Constructed in 1833, it is the oldest remaining mainland lighthouse in the province. Located at the end of Patrick Street, this historic beacon has guided vessels safely into St. Andrews Harbour for over a century.The lighthouse is recognized for its distinctive octagonal shape, a design shared by only seven other lighthouses in New Brunswick. Rising 13 meters above the high water mark, its lantern room features a unique design with dozens of small panes of glass in each of its eight windows. The original light consisted of four lamps and reflectors, illuminated by oil.The lighthouse is also significant for its association with the Pendlebury family, who operated it from the 1840s until 1938. John Pendlebury, the first of the family to tend the light, came from England. His son, George, and later his daughter, Emma, continued the tradition until the lighthouse was decommissioned.While no longer a functioning lighthouse, Pendlebury Lighthouse remains a cherished landmark and a popular spot for visitors. The surrounding area offers beautiful views of the Bay of Fundy, perfect for photography and relaxation. Informative signs share the lighthouse's history, and a small beach provides opportunities for exploration. The adjacent Pendlebury Park offers a spot for picnics and enjoying the coastal scenery.Rising sea levels and stronger winds are putting this historic landmark at significant risk. A preservation fund has been established to restore the lighthouse and upgrade the surrounding boardwalk and shore.
