Discover more about Dorchester Square

Dorchester Square, located in the heart of downtown Montreal, is a meticulously maintained urban parkland steeped in history and culture. Spanning over 2.1 hectares (5.19 acres) with Place du Canada, this green space provides a serene escape from the surrounding urban environment. Originally the site of the Sainte-Antoine Cemetery, the land was transformed into Dominion Square in 1878, later renamed Dorchester Square. The square boasts several monuments, including the Boer War Memorial, statues of Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Robert Burns, and a replica of the Lion of Belfort. These monuments pay homage to significant figures and events in Canadian and British history. In 2010, the square underwent a $14 million redesign, which included refurbished monuments, new street furniture, and an improved lighting scheme. As a nod to its past as a cemetery, small crosses are embedded in the walkways. Dorchester Square is bordered by notable buildings such as the Sun Life Building and the Dominion Square Building, further solidifying its importance in Montreal's urban landscape. The square continues to be a gathering place for protests, rallies, and social gatherings, reflecting its ongoing role in Montreal's civic life.
