Place Royale, located in the heart of Old Montreal, is a historic landmark that embodies Quebec's rich heritage. This picturesque square, with its cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved architecture, serves as a reminder of the area's storied past. Originally Montreal's first Place d'Armes in the 1600s, it later became a public market for two centuries. In 1611, Samuel de Champlain established a fur trading post on this site, initially named La Place Royale. The square was officially designated Place Royale in 1892 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the settlement of Ville Marie. Key features of Place Royale include the Old Customs House, a neoclassical building dating back to 1836. Today, it's linked to the Pointe-à-Callière, Montreal Archaeology and History Complex, and houses the museum's gift shop. Archaeological excavations since 1979 have revealed prehistoric artifacts, highlighting the area's long history. Visitors can explore the square's historical structures, enjoy the atmosphere, and learn about significant events and figures through information plaques. Street performers and artists add a lively touch to the serene setting.
